And again…

Posted by astrogeek on April 29, 2009

On Monday I told you about one of my answers on Yahoo! Answers Astronomy & Space being deleted.   Well, it appears that I am indeed the target of a campaign of censorship, because today I received this:

Hello AstroGeek <redacted>

Question: is the world really going to end in 2012?

Question Details: i heard that from 2 friends.

Deleted Answer: campbelp2002 is right, there is nothing to worry about. My daughter also hears this at school. The “2012 doomsday” is a hoax. It’s a fraud. It’s a con job. It’s a cruel and cynical lie being promoted by unscrupulous pseudo-scientific cranks who have a monetary interest: They want to sell their books, videos, ’survival kits’, and spaces in non-existent shelters in Antarctica, and to divert attention from the fact that they have been wrong so many times before. It’s also being pushed by people who are promoting a Hollywood disaster movie due out later this year. All of the claims of ‘predictions’ by the Maya, the Aztecs, the Chinese (I Ching), Nostradamus, Sir Isaac Newton, Edgar Cayce, “Mother Shipton” are false: they did not make the claimed predictions. Predictions by others such as José Argüelles, Terrence McKenna, Nancy Leider, Mark Hazelwood and others are contrived pseudo-scientific nonsense. There is no “Planet X” or Nibiru. If someone claims that this object exists, then many regulars in this forum have been asking for the RA/Dec coordinates for it. If they can provide those coordinates and allow independent verification of its existence, then they can collect $5,000 from http://nibiruchallenge.blogspot.com. There will be no ‘pole shift’, either geographic or magnetic. There will be no ‘killer solar flares’. There is no ‘Photon Belt’. These events are fiction. There will be no ‘galactic alignment’ or ‘planetary alignment‘ of any kind, and we will not pass through the central plane of the galaxy, and even if these events were to occur, they would not cause any problems for us. As far as what is *really* going to happen: Olympic games in London Leap Year U.S. Presidential election Transit of Venus on June 6th Disclaimer: Due to the number of “2012″ questions on Yahoo! Answers, this is a cut-and-paste answer. Please see my complete (long) opinion in the first link below. So, apparently I can answer questions as long as I don’t point people to this site.  Interesting…

What I take from this is that someone really doesn’t like my 2012 hoax page.   The only consolation I can take from this is that A) The answer generated an email to the question asker with my content in it and B) that when I appeal they will ‘lose influence in the community’.

Yippie.

Yes, I have appealed, and no, I haven’t heard anything about my appeal of Monday’s deletion.

Over at A Sky Full of Stars, Tavi and Rob have a post about tonight’s ’sunset treats’.  Head on over and read up on how to catch Mercury next to the Pleiades, the Hyades, Vesta and Orion Nebula, and four open clusters (M35, M36, M37 and M38)  next to the crecent moon!

They’ve done it again…

Posted by astrogeek on April 27, 2009

Seems like my answers on Yahoo! Answers Astronmy & Space are earning the ire of the 2012 hoaxers again… they’ve managed to get another one of my answers deleted.  I’m appealing, of course.

This time I was told that my answer was ’solicitation’, which I’m guessing means that because I included a link to my “2012 hoax” page, that it was against the rules.   This is a bit incredible… Yahoo! Answers allows only a certain number of characters in their answers.  My 2012 hoax page is considerably longer than this limit.  I’ve referenced that page in literally hundreds of posts on Yahoo! Answers.  Now, if this stands, it appears that I can answer the “2012″ question with a link to anything except my own site.

I’ll let you know what happens.

This makes me mad

Posted by astrogeek on April 24, 2009

Below is a question posted recently on Yahoo! Answers (I’ve left out the link, and fixed some typos, but other than that, it is as it was originally posted).

Is their really going to be a comet heading to earth in 2012 or am I worrying over nothing?
Please I’m really scared I’m only 14 and would love to LIVE.  A full life.
And how could people see 3 years into the future.  ( I think scientists would have done something by now? Would they? )
I’m really scared.

This is the kind of stuff I’m seeing more and more of… kids… children really, worrying about something that is a complete fiction!

So to all of you “2012 believers” out there… this is what you’re doing to our kids!  Nancy Leider, Jose Arguelles, Marshall Masters, Mark Hazelwood, Zacharia Sitchin, all of you this is your fault, you greedy, irresponsible, money-grubbing, scare-mongering idiots!

Remember Chayya! If one child hurts themselves because of this hoax, I hope that their parents sue you, your publishers, all of  your associates, and everybody who repeats your fraudulent claims!  Personally, I’d like to see the lot of you up on criminal charges!

Excuse me while I go take a walk to calm down.

Comments Reopened

Posted by astrogeek on April 22, 2009

Sorry about that. Apparently when I was playing around with the themes the discussion settings got changed, and WordPress automagically closed comments on all posts/pages over 90 days old.    Well, I’ve reopened them, so have at it!
